A new 4D Cinema experience has debuted at the Portlantis visitor centre in the Netherlands.

Developed by Simworx, a leading creator of dynamic, media-based attractions, the experience offers a thrilling and educational exploration of the Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport. Guests are invited to explore the harbour from land, sea, and sky through dynamic visuals and immersive special effects.

Called Helios Experience, the attraction combines a 3DOF motion base with aeroplane-style harnesses and special effects including wind and water mist. Upon entering, visitors are introduced to the fictional Helios Concepts, an innovative transportation company based in the Port of Rotterdam. Riders are invited by the company’s head of design and development to tour its high-tech workshop, where engineers are developing futuristic transportation solutions. Guests receive an exclusive preview of these concepts for transporting containers, liquid cargo, and goods, before embarking on a high-flying journey across the port.

“We’re thrilled to open a new attraction in the Netherlands, a country so well known for amazing world-class visitor experiences,” said Simworx CEO Terry Monkton.

“We thoroughly enjoyed working with the Port of Rotterdam, helping them to bring their incredible story to life, and creating an exciting, original attraction that shows what the harbour does and how it could transform the future.”

Opened in March 2025, Portlantis is a state-of-the-art visitor centre located at the Port of Rotterdam. It offers an immersive experience exploring the port’s rich maritime history and its vision for the future.

The centre is housed in a geometric, demountable building designed by architecture studio MVRDV with sustainability in mind. Featuring reusable façade panels, 266 solar panels, and its own wind turbine, the facility is fully energy-neutral.

Inspired by the shape of Rubik’s cube in play, the building is organised into multiple levels, each with its own distinct theme designed to engage and inspire visitors.

It is hoped that Portlantis will attract 150,000 visitors annually.

“We are proud to showcase the Port of Rotterdam to a wide audience in Portlantis. We are thus responding to the interest of visitors from all over the world, as well as from this region,” said Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

“In Portlantis, people can admire our port, learn all about it and also have space for reflection.”
