Molly Murphy to lead Universal Creative after being named new president

Molly Murphy has been named the new president of Universal Creative, with the former Gensler principal set to lead the design and creation of Universal theme park experiences across the world

Molly Murphy will lead the design and creation of Universal theme park experiences across the world, after being named the new president of Universal Creative.

Joining from architects Gensler, where she served as principal and co-managing director of the firm’s New York division, Murphy also co-founded the firm’s Digital Experience Design practice, which creates Immersive experiences using interactive and visualisation technology and software.

“Molly has an energy and a set of proven capabilities that will further enhance our ability to deliver the most immersive stories and experiences to our guests,” said Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO, Universal Destinations & Experiences.

“Our focus on expanding the Universal brand to new people, in new places and on new platforms is well underway. Her ability to blend technology with architecture, brand and design will help take our great product to even higher levels.”

Murphy replaces Mike Hightower as the head of Universal Creative. Hightower left the company in March along with the company’s former chief creative officer Thierry Coup, who announced his own retirement.

Murphy will hit the ground running following her appointment, with Universal currently developing a huge list of projects, most notably its Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, as well as a children’s park in Texas and a horror experience in Las Vegas.

“Human interaction and connection are at the heart of physical design and the delivery of compelling places,” said Murphy. “Universal brings this idea to life better than anyone else, and I look forward to joining the team as we create authentic, lasting experiences for our guests and fans around the world.”

In March, Mark Woodbury announced Brian Robinson as the new EVP, chief creative officer for Universal Creative, with Eric Parr taking on the role as SVP, Creative Studio. Murphy will take up her new position starting August 14.
