Meta Quest - the newly rebranded Oculus headset from Facebook - and ILMxLAB have announced plans to bring a special preview version of Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge to the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.
ILMxLAB - the virtual reality and immersive entertainment studio for Lucasfilm - has partnered with the newly-christened Meta on the project, presenting the VR experience at the Disneyland Resort from November 21, 2021, to January 5, 2022.
“This preview version of ILMxLAB’s virtual reality experience expands the world of Batuu like never before, said a post from Disneyland Resort.
“Once inside the Quest 2 headset, you’ll be immersed within sweeping 360 views of the Star Wars galaxy. The adventure takes place on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu, as depicted in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the immersive epic lands at Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.”
Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge will feature a mix of new and iconic characters, including R2D2, C3P0 and Yoda, with the experience designed to accommodate a range of players.
In the first part of the game, players will take on the role of a droid repair technician operating near the Outer Rim. When a group of pirates attack and the player crashes on Batuu, they will have to become to hero to survive the encounter.
The experience continues with Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge-Last Call, a recently-released expansion to the original Oculus release that allows players to get into the training boots of an up-and-coming Jedi.
While at the Downtown Disney District, the preview experience will operate from midday to 8 pm daily and will be located adjacent to Star Wars Trading Post.
The event is a first-ever for Meta Quest at the Disneyland Resort, and those who try the game will get a US$25 store credit for use in the Quest store, while supplies last.
“We are excited for guests to virtually experience Seezelslak’s Cantina and meet Mubo (Owner of the Droid Depot!) at the Downtown Disney District activation,” said Jose Perez III, supervisor, Creative Development and Experience Design at Lucasfilm/ILMxLAB.
“ILMxLAB worked diligently expanding the story of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and we all hope our guests have a wonderful time visiting the strange and beautiful planet of Batuu in VR.”
