Merlin’s ‘next generation’ of Lego Discovery Centre coming to three US locations

Featuring a new look and visitor experience, Merlin’s “next generation” of rebranded Lego Discovery Centres are set to make their way to the US, with three new attractions coming to Washington DC, Boston and Atlanta in 2023.

The Washington DC site will be an entirely new attraction, while the Boston and Atlanta sites will be full renovations of former Legoland Discovery Centres, with each attraction gaining four new interactive zones in the process. The reimagined attraction says Merlin, is designed to offer more family learning-through-play activities and will include a new team of playmakers and master model builders, as well as several new experiences, including a digital experience, a train ride and a pre-school offering.

Called Lego Space, the new digital experience sees visitors create their own space rocket out of Lego bricks in real life. This rocket is then digitally scanned, with guests able to watch their model being built and launched into space. Guests will also be able to fly the ship, dodge aliens and land on other planets in the Lego Space solar system.

The train ride sees kids take a seat on the Imagination Express, which promises to be “a train ride like no other”, as families embark on an interactive adventure with special devices used to collect points. Through the train ride, guests go through an oversized Lego World, enter a giant bubble bath and travel down through the plug hole, entering the Lego ocean and eventually journeying into outer space.

For children under five years old, the pre-school offering features a Lego dinosaur-themed carousel and slides, using the popular Duplo brand.

The first Lego Discovery Centre opened in Brussels, Belgium, in June, bringing the total number of existing Lego Discovery Centres up to 27.

“Following the highly successful Brussels attraction launch in Belgium in Europe, it’s great that our guests in North America are going to be next to experience the brand-new look and design Lego Discovery Centres,” said Scott Maupin, divisional director at Merlin Entertainments.

“The Merlin team here in the US have been delighted to have worked closely with the global Lego Group’s strategic team to bring all the elements of interactive play to the new store in Washington DC, as well as bringing the magic to the two already established attractions in Boston and Atlanta.”
