A major new waterpark is gearing up for its opening next month, in Haiyan County, Zhejiang province, China, not far from the major cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou.

The new waterpark, with an adjacent theme park also under construction, sits on the site where Six Flags Zhejiang was originally under development. Six Flags pulled out of the project, which would have become the first Six Flags park in China, in early 2020.

The site is now being developed into a cultural tourism destination by Sunac China Holdings, a company with a vast portfolio in the residential, commercial, cultural, tourism, and family entertainment sectors.

Sunac Water Park

Covering an area of 105,000sq m (1.1m sq ft), Hangzhou Bay Sunac Water Park has completed construction and testing and is ready to welcome visitors to its grand opening on 26 June.

The waterpark, supplied by WhiteWater and ProsSlide, boasts 18 rides. The big-budget thrill rides include a 12-second 70-degree drop slide promising riders speeds of up to 60 mph, the 347-metre ‘Sea Dragon’ water coaster, one of the longest water coasters in China, and a water tornado raft ride.

Alongside the rides, Sunac Water Park offers a 7,000sq m (75,347sq ft) wave pool. Equipped with a stage and huge LED screen and sound system, the wave pool will host parties and performances. Meanwhile, families can enjoy a kilometre-long lazy river, and several themed children’s waterplay zones. There is also a 5,000sq m (53,819sq ft) F&B area with 10 restaurants and seating for 1,400 diners, and an on-site ‘leisure spa’.

Theme Park

Within the 3sq km Sunac Cultural Tourism City site, Sunac Land, Snow World, a children’s theme park, retail street and three hotels are also under construction. The hotels are scheduled to open by the end of 2022, with the whole project scheduled to open by the end of 2024.

The wheel structure of Sunac Land’s signature ferris wheel, is east China’s tallest at 128 metres. Five rollercoasters are due to be imported before the end of the year.

The destination should also benefit from upcoming high-speed rail connections.

Six Flags

Six Flags said last year it had “encountered continued challenges” with its planned projects in China in partnership with Riverside Investment Group.

Alongside Six Flags Zhejiang, Six Flags Chongqing has also been abandoned. Construction on Six Flags Nanjing has so far failed to get off the ground and the site is reportedly derelict.
