March is a month of celebration for South Africa’s Johannesburg Zoo, with the attraction celebrating the 120th anniversary since its foundation.
Opening on March 22, 1904, with just a lion, a leopard, a giraffe and two sable antelope, the zoo has grown significantly in over a century, with the attraction now boasting a collection of more than 2,000 animals.
On March 21, the zoo will host a birthday celebration, with live music, face-painting and an in-house birthday bash safari to catch a peek of “the Big 5”.
“When we celebrate occasions as big as 120 years of existence, we take the time to remember the humble beginnings and look forward to the possibilities the future may hold. With that in mind we have to celebrate with all the wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers who love and adore the zoo as much as we do,” said Johannesburg Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley.
“The Johannesburg Zoo remains the most sought-after entry point to view the big five in the city. So, to experience the rip-roaring birthday, patrons must make sure to join us for the celebration.”
