In 2023 humankind will once again head to the moon with the first ever civilian lunar mission, with Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa seeking eight volunteers from around the world to join him in what will be the first ever space tourist flight.
Called dearMoon, the full crew for the mission will be between 10 and 12 people, including Maezawa and the eight volunteers.
Boldly going further into outer space than anyone ever has before, the crew will travel on Elon Musk’s Starship - a rocket currently being developed by SpaceX for outer space travel.
“What’s really significant about the dearMoon mission is that it will be the first private spaceflight, first commercial spaceflight with humans beyond Earth’s orbit,” said Musk. “ This has never occurred before and we’re going to go past the Moon, so it will actually end up being further than any human has ever gone from planet Earth.”
The mission will take three days to get the Moon, loop around it and then three more days to return to Earth.
“I’m inviting you to join me on this mission,” said Maezawa. “Eight of you from all around the world. I will pay for the entire journey. I have bought all the seats, so it will be a private ride. I hope together we can make it a fun trip.
I want people from all kinds of backgrounds to join. It doesn’t matter what you are doing. You want to help people and contribute to society. You want to take your creative activity to the next level. If any of this sounds familiar, please join me.”
Pre-registration for dearMoon ends on March 14, with initial screening taking place from March 21. Applicants will then be given an assignment with selected candidates being given an online interview. In late May 2021, there will be a final interview and medical checkup, with the selected eight candidates then announced. The lunar journey will be the first to feature humans since 1972.
