Japan has finally reopened its borders to tourists from 98 countries and regions, though it comes with strict conditions to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19 from overseas.

Japan has finally reopened its borders to tourists from 98 countries and regions, though it comes with strict conditions to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19 from overseas.
As part of a government plan to gradually reopen the country over the course of two years, foreign tourists visiting Japan will be required to wear masks, take out private medical insurance and be chaperoned throughout their stay. The first phase of reopening will also only allow visitors on package tours into the country.
“Tour guides should frequently remind tour participants of necessary infection prevention measures, including wearing and removing masks, at each stage of the tour,” reads the Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) guidelines.
“Even outdoors, the wearing of masks should continue in situations where people are conversing in close proximity.”
The new rules will buoy attractions such as Universal Studios Japan, which has been missing its foreign visitors for some time. In 2019, Japan hosted 31.9 million foreign visitors, who spent a total of ¥4.81tn (US$50.1bn, €47.37bn, £40.32bn).
