Construction on Great Wolf Resorts’ (GWR) first UK destination is well underway, with the American waterpark resort operator reporting that essential access and utility works are currently being carried out.

The company shared an update in August that said the works were ‘progressing well’ with the majority of the access works, which include pedestrian walkways and cycle paths, already completed and the remaining expected to complete in September.

Construction works are scheduled to conclude in 2024, once completed the £200m (US$255m, €233m) resort, located in Oxfordshire, UK, will span 45 acres and will feature an indoor water park with several waterslides and pools, an adventure park offering rope course, climbing walls, arcades, and a bowling alley.

The complex will also include a 504-room hotel, multiple food and beverage outlets and conference facilities with an outdoor terrace.

First proposed in 2019, the resort was initially rejected, with Cherwell District Council (CDC) citing transportation and congestion concerns as grounds for objection. GWR was granted an appeal in late 2020 before the project entered its construction phase in 2021.

Works are being carried out by Irish construction firm John Sisk & Son and building services contractor Kane.

GWR is also closely working with several local authorities, including Oxfordshire County Council, Chesterton Parish Council and CDC, as the company prepares to submit further information and design materials relating to the now-approved development.

The resort is one of several Great Wolf resorts currently under development, including the possibility of a second UK destination in Hampshire and several in the US, including locations in Texas, Connecticut and Florida.

In addition, the company has recently opened a number of new attractions at the Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos in Pennsylvania, US. The new additions form part of US$125m (€115m, £98m) renovation package, which has seen the expansion of its waterpark to include seven new waterslides. Other improvements include a new outdoor entertainment area with a pool and a redesigned lobby.
