Former Merlin CEO Nick Varney awarded Knighthood

Merlin’s long-time former CEO Nick Varney has been recognised with a Knighthood in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours List for services to the visitor economy.

Merlin’s long-time former CEO Nick Varney has been recognised with a Knighthood in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours List for services to the visitor economy.

Varney who was a part of Merlin since 1999 when he, alongside the senior management team of Vardon Attractions, completed a £47m (US$59m, €56m) management buyout, has grown the company into one of the world’s largest visitor attractions operators.

“I’m incredibly humbled and proud to have been awarded this accolade,” said Sir Nick.

“Having worked in the tourism and leisure industry for over 30 years, I have had the privilege of helping to build Merlin from a small British business to the global company it is today. This enormous honour is shared with all those at Merlin both past and present, who were part of that amazing journey. Following the difficulties the hospitality and tourism industry experienced during the pandemic, this Knighthood reinforces the importance of our sector to the UK, one which contributes over £130bn each year to the British economy. I’m humbled to have played my part alongside many others in what is an amazing industry.”

Varney retired from his position earlier this year and was succeeded by Scott O’Neil.
