Citizens of Austria, Belgium, Hungary and Luxembourg can now enter China without a visa, with visa-free entry introduced to boost post-pandemic Chinese tourism.

Joining residents in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland, residents in the four new countries will be granted visa-free entry for up to 15 days, with a trial programme in effect for one year.

In 2023, China recorded 35.5 million entries and exits by foreigners, a significant decline compared to 97.7 million for all of 2019 pre-pandemic.

According to China’s foreign ministry, the aim is “to facilitate the high-quality development of Chinese and foreign personnel exchanges and high-level opening up to the outside world”.
