Dr Nick Merriman is set to replace Kate Mavor CBE as chief executive of English Heritage, the charity has announced.
Merriman currently serves as chief executive and director of content at London’s Horniman Museum and Gardens and has previously served in directorial roles at the Manchester Museum and University College London. His experience also includes curator of prehistory and department head of early London history and collections at the Museum of London.
Taking up the post in early 2024, Merriman will oversee the National Heritage Collection, which comprises some 400 heritage sites and their collections, as well as the London blue plaques initiative.
“The collection of sites in English Heritage’s care is unique and I’m extremely excited to be joining the charity,” Merriman said.
“Like many others, my childhood was spent clambering around English Heritage castles and I firmly believe that heritage is as much about people as it is about places, whether those who lived and worked there in the past or who, like me, enjoy them today. I’m looking forward to introducing more people to these inspiring landmarks.”
