With the Year of the Ox just around the corner, Shanghai Disneyland this week launched its Chinese New Year celebrations and festivities.

The Spring Festival, which lasts through to February 26, sees the park brought to life with traditional decorations and events inspired by the nation’s most important holiday.

For the festival, beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Goofy are donning their Lunar New Year outfits, with Goofy playing the “God of Fortune”.

On February 12 - New Year’s Day in China - Mickey and Minnie will be wearing exclusive costumes made by famous Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei, and a new character will join Shanghai’s Disney cast, Clarabelle Cow – thanks to her being somewhat similar to an ox.

Meanwhile, at night, a new show called Our Families will entertain guests, while the Nighttime Spectacular is projecting messages of hope onto the Enchanted Storybook Castle. Actress Pan Hong’s Shanghainese version of Once Upon a Time is also returning to the castle.

Further festive touches around the Disneyland resort include seasonal Disney Friends decorations in the Gardens of Imagination, a wishing garden where park guests can engage in the custom of writing hopes for the new year, and traditional cultural experiences such as dragon mask making, Chinese calligraphy, puppet shows and shadow play.
