Deadpool mocks Splash Mountain’s controversial past on Disney park debut

Deadpool and Wolverine have made their mark on Disney’s parks, with a joint appearance seeing Deadpool enter the Disney Parks Universe by mocking the controversial history of its Splash Mountain ride

Deadpool made headlines last week after becoming the first Rated-R character in the entire history of Disney to appear at one of the operator’s theme parks. This week he’s making the headlines for mocking the park’s controversial former Splash Mountain ride.

Coinciding with the release of Deadpool and Wolverine Ryan Reynolds’ version of the character appeared at the Avengers Campus at both Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris over the weekend.

In France, guests could meet Deadpool for a traditional meet and greet, while in California, Deadpool made an entertainment appearance alongside Wolverine in ‘Story Time with Deadpool’.

Skipping to the stage while classical Disney music plays and taking a seat in a comfortable-looking armchair, Deadpool, wearing reading glasses and a woollen sweater, tells the story of ‘Beautypool and the Wolverbeast’, reading from a “big book of special stories”.

Saying that he had to spend “a lot of time on my knees begging” for the opportunity, Deadpool is interrupted by Wolverine, also making his Disney Parks debut.

Even breaking the fourth wall in Disney parks, Deadpool declares to Wolverine “this is a special moment for everybody here, let’s take some pictures like prom”.

“This isn’t for me Wolvie, this is for the kids… and all the adults streaming this to their social media platform”, Deadpool adds.

During the performance, Wolverine says: “Anyway Pool Boy makes a mess of things as usual then it’s up to Wolverine to save the day. Blah blah blah, I slice up some bad guys while Beauty Queen stands in the corner making a bunch of stupid jokes with outdated cultural references.”

Deadpool responds in shock, declaring: “My jokes are not outdated. They are hilarious and modern and unending just like Splash Mountain… oops too soon?”.

Few of Disney's theme park rides have been more controversial than Splash Mountain, which has undergone a complete overhaul to take out references to the controversial Song of the South and replace them with a Princess and the Frog theme. US$142m (€130m, £110.3m) has been spent on the transformation, which reopened last month as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

With Deadpool mocking the controversy, visitors to Disney parks have been given a hint at how the character will be portrayed in live appearances. The release of Deadpool and Wolverine could hint at further parks appearances for the character, with Disney likely wanting to capitalise on the success of the film, which shattered opening weekend box office records for a Rated-R movie. The film itself even hints at more Deadpool park appearances, with the character declaring in the film itself “I’m going to Disneyland!”
