Florida’s Republican governor and Presidential hopeful, Ron DeSantis, has turned his eye to benefits received by Disney employees in his latest move against the company.
The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board, appointed by DeSantis to try and strip Disney of its self-governing powers, said on Monday that a referral has been submitted to the Florida inspector general claiming that benefits given to employees funnel money back to Disney at the expense of the district.
According to the board, the perks and benefits given to employees and their families in the past year total around US$2.5m and amount to “unethical behavior.”
“For decades, the former Disney-run RCID (Reedy Creek Improvement District) used taxpayer funds to provide season passes and amusement experiences to its employees and their family members, cover the cost of discounts on hotels, merchandise, food, and beverages, and give its own board members VIP main entrance passes,” said the board in a release.
“In addition to constituting unethical benefits and perks, the scheme raises significant questions regarding self-dealing as the board members were only permitted a maximum of US$100 per month in compensation per the Reedy Creek Improvement District Act.”
The move is the latest development in a 17-month feud between the governor and the entertainment giant, which began in March 2022 after the company suspended political donations in Florida following public pressure in response to the state’s controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill.
