Ponant will soon be bringing history to life through the Smithsonian’s lens, after the French cruise ship operator announced a partnership with the institution for themed cruises.

The cruise line, which is headquartered in Marseille, has teamed up with Smithsonian Journeys - the travel programme for the Smithsonian Institution - to bring its passengers 19 themed departures to locations including Antarctica, Japan, Iceland, Europe and the Great Lakes.

Smithsonian Journeys is known for its small-group excursions with an emphasis on education. This is Smithsonian’s first alliance with an expedition line, with the special sailings delving into the history of a region and guests educated about its cuisine, language, environment and wildlife.

Depending on the location, each itinerary will feature a range of archeologists, scientists, anthropologists and historians. These experts will enrich the immersive cultural experience and enhance understanding for each of the destinations the cruise visits.

"As travel begins to resume, we believe guests will be more interested than ever in meaningful and enriching experiences that help to better interpret and understand the places they're exploring," said Lynn Cutter, senior vice president of Smithsonian Travel.

Ponant has implemented COVID-19 safety protocols on all of its sailings, meaning all passengers over the age of 16 must be vaccinated at least 14 days before boarding a ship. In addition, all passengers must show proof of a negative test taken within 72 hours of their arrival. Expeditions will take place from 2022.

"Ponant has been a pioneer in immersing travelers in destinations in meaningful ways for more than 30 years," said Navin Sawhney, chief executive officer for the Americas for Ponant. "We’re proud to launch a collaboration with Smithsonian Journeys, the enduring leader in cultural enrichment, to continue to deliver unparalleled experiences alongside guides that have traversed the globe for decades and top experts in their field.”
