China’s first Legoland Resort has officially opened in south-west Shanghai.

Legoland Shanghai Resort, located in the city’s Jinshan District, is Merlin Entertainments’ first resort in China.

It was developed in partnership with the Jinshan District and investment groups including the Shanghai Jinshan Urban Investment Group, KIRKBI Invest A/S, and CMC Inc.

The US$550m (€469m, £405m) resort is Merlin’s largest Legoland park globally, spanning 318,000 sq m (3.4 million sq ft) and includes a 250-room hotel and a theme park with eight immersive lands.

It offers more than 75 interactive rides, shows, and attractions, alongside thousands of Lego models built from over 85 million Lego bricks. According to Merlin, “every corner of the resort is designed to create unforgettable memories.”

To mark the grand opening on July 5, Merlin hosted a celebration featuring Legoland characters Mike and Amy and musical performances.

The event was attended by senior representatives from the Shanghai and Jinshan governments, New Jinshan Investment Group, the Lego Group, and Merlin Entertainments. Several of the resort’s Kid Reporters were also in attendance.

Legoland Shanghai Resort is also hosting a Grand Opening Week to celebrate the attraction’s launch. Running until July 13, the event offers a range of immersive experiences, character interactions, daily shows and minifigure swaps. Themed decorations, exclusive offers, merchandise discounts and other Lego treats are also available.

“Our purpose at Merlin Entertainments is to bring people together to create memorable experiences for families around the world. Today, we are taking that to the next level, with the opening of Legoland Shanghai Resort, our first Legoland Resort in China, the second biggest theme park market in the world,” said Fiona Eastwood, CEO of Merlin Entertainments.

“This milestone represents a major step towards our ambition to be the global leader in branded entertainment destinations.

“Our deep understanding of the Chinese consumer and our experience of operating in China for over a decade has allowed us to create Legoland Shanghai as the ultimate theme park and hotel destination.

“It blends the tried and tested Legoland experience, which is so successful across our parks from Denmark to Dubai, with rich Chinese cultural elements, creating a destination that is both globally recognisable and locally resonant, connecting children with their heritage through imaginative play.

“From the first sketches to the final Lego brick, this resort is the result of years of vision, collaboration, and passion, and is a testament to the dedication of our teams and the unwavering support of all our partners.”
