The exhibition combines fictional Pokemon with real-life ancient counterparts
A popular exhibition combining Pokémon and real-life dinosaurs is coming to North America for the first time.
Called Pokémon Fossil Museum, the exhibition was developed by Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science and The Pokémon Company International.
Aiming to teach guests about paleontology by connecting Pokémon characters to the real animals that lived on Earth millions of years ago, the exhibition showcases fictional Pokemon alongside real life fossils, including dinosaurs and other ancient animals.
In the exhibition, ‘Professor Fossil’ and his helper ‘Excavator Pikachu’ will work with Field Museum scientists to help visitors get a close look at the fossils from each world.
Proving very popular in Japan, the exhibition will now be coming to the Field Museum in Chicago, with Pokémon Fossil Museum set to debut in 2026.
“During your visit, you’ll see vibrant Pokémon models side by side with extinct lifeforms from the Field Museum’s collection - including scientific casts of Field Museum dinosaurs like SUE the T. rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx next to Fossil Pokémon like Tyrantrum and Archeops,” said the Pokemon Company. “How many differences (and similarities) will you spot, Trainers?”
Jaap Hoogstraten, head of Exhibitions at the Field Museum, added: “The fact that Pokémon is rooted in real science is not something that most of us think about. By forefronting that aspect of the story, we hope that Pokémon Fossil Museum will be a pathway to science for our visitors – especially budding paleontologists.”
Pokémon Fossil Museum will open at the Field Museum on May 22nd, 2026.
