Bob Iger brands governor Ron DeSantis retaliations against Disney ‘anti-business, anti-Florida’

Bob Iger has slammed Florida governor Ron DeSantis for for being ‘anti-business’ and ‘anti-Florida’ following moves to try and strip Disney of its self-governing power

Iger blasts DeSantis moves against Disney as ‘anti-business, anti-Florida’

Disney CEO Bob Iger has accused Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis of being “anti-Florida” in the latest round of the entertainment company’s political battle with the Presidential hopeful.

Disney and DeSantis have been at war ever since Disney opposed Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which restricts what teachers can educate children on when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues.

DeSantis has attempted to strip Disney of its special Reedy Creek governing district, which allows the company to regulate itself in Florida at Disney World.

In response, Disney invoked the name of King Charles III with a special clause that handed control back to the mouse for the time being.

As a result, DeSantis has ordered an investigation into the move, which Iger says would punish the company for its “exercise of a constitutional right.”

Speaking at the company’s annual meeting, Iger slammed DeSantis for his actions against Disney as “not just anti-business, but anti-Florida”.

"It seems like he's decided to retaliate against us, including the naming of a new board to oversee the property and the business, in effect to seek to punish a company for its exercise of a constitutional right," Iger added. "That just seems really wrong to me."

DeSantis has previously said that “if Disney wants to pick a fight, they chose the wrong guy”, also adding that he would “not allow a woke corporation based in California to run our state”.

Disney is planning to invest more than US$17bn into Disney World over the course of the next decade. This, says Iger, will create more than 13,000 jobs as well as thousands of indirect jobs, benefiting Florida.
