In its bid to combat overtourism, Amsterdam in the Netherlands has said that by 2035 no cruise ships will be permitted to visit the famous city.

With a ban already in place on large cruise ships, Amsterdam has taken things further by capping cruise visits to 100 per year - around half of the current figures. That will be reduced to zero by 2035.

“Sea cruises are polluting and cause crowds and emissions in the city,” the municipality said in its announcement. “The aim is to permanently leave the cruise terminal at Veemkade in 2035.”

According to the Port Authority, the passenger terminal for cruise ships will be relocated to Coenhaven, which is around 20 minutes away from Amsterdam.
